For the episode, &#8220;Chimera,&#8221; Odo and Kira decided to take their relationship to a new level. Because she was a solid, Kira could never &#8220;meld&#8221; into oneness with the changeling, Odo, so they did the next best thing which was &#8230;.\u00a0 what?\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>At this point the DS9 production team was stumped. What could Odo do?<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;Uh, anybody have any ideas?&#8221; \u00a0&#8220;How about Odo becoming a cloud and snowing on Kira?&#8221;\u00a0\u00a0Nope. The women in the production thought it too cold sounding.\u00a0 &#8220;Kira could snuggle into Odo as he morphs into a pillow or a blanket.&#8221;\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 Hmmm, Odo would have to morph through\u00a0his <span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">goo<\/span> state to become a pillow or blanket.\u00a0 That didn&#8217;t sound warm or cozy. Nothing suggested felt visually beautiful or romantic. So production filming began without this sequence finalized.<\/p>\n<p>\u00a0<!--more--><\/p>\n<p>Fortunately I was the visual effect supervisor for this episode and\u00a0 I\u00a0remembered a story my then wife told me about how she reacted when, as a little girl, she first saw the northern sky filled with shimmering sheets of colored light over the Great Lakes in upper Michigan.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\">\u00a0<img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-107\" title=\"frames0047\" src=\"https:\/\/davidstipes.net\/wp-content\/uploads\/2009\/05\/frames0047.jpg\" alt=\"frames0047\" width=\"558\" height=\"432\" srcset=\"https:\/\/davidstipes.net\/wp-content\/uploads\/2009\/05\/frames0047.jpg 620w, https:\/\/davidstipes.net\/wp-content\/uploads\/2009\/05\/frames0047-300x232.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 558px) 100vw, 558px\" \/><\/p>\n<p>So I pitched the idea to the director and producers that Odo would become a warm romantic aurora borealis surround Kira with shimmering colors, iridescence and sparkles of light.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-110\" title=\"frames0050\" src=\"https:\/\/davidstipes.net\/wp-content\/uploads\/2009\/05\/frames0050.jpg\" alt=\"frames0050\" width=\"576\" height=\"437\" srcset=\"https:\/\/davidstipes.net\/wp-content\/uploads\/2009\/05\/frames0050.jpg 640w, https:\/\/davidstipes.net\/wp-content\/uploads\/2009\/05\/frames0050-300x227.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 576px) 100vw, 576px\" \/><\/p>\n<p>\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Everyone liked the idea.
