{"id":607,"date":"2011-03-13T13:28:34","date_gmt":"2011-03-13T20:28:34","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/davidstipes.net\/?p=607"},"modified":"2011-03-13T16:16:16","modified_gmt":"2011-03-13T23:16:16","slug":"building-the-%e2%80%9cnormally-this-weird%e2%80%9d-death-ray-weapon-part-3","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/davidstipes.net\/?p=607","title":{"rendered":"Building the \u201cNormally This Weird\u201d Death Ray Weapon  part 3"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>As I mentioned in my prior post, my friend Diane Cook introduced me to a fantastic, low cost craft material that we put to use in a number of ways on our death ray prop and on a put-it-together-quickly \u00a0\u201ctime machine.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>What is this material?<\/p>\n<p><!--more--><\/p>\n<div class=\"mceTemp mceIEcenter\" style=\"text-align: left;\">Fun Foam!<\/div>\n<div id=\"attachment_608\" style=\"width: 580px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><a href=\"https:\/\/davidstipes.net\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/03\/fun_foam.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-608\" class=\"size-full wp-image-608\" title=\"fun_foam\" src=\"https:\/\/davidstipes.net\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/03\/fun_foam.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"570\" height=\"269\" srcset=\"https:\/\/davidstipes.net\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/03\/fun_foam.jpg 570w, https:\/\/davidstipes.net\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/03\/fun_foam-300x141.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 570px) 100vw, 570px\" \/><\/a><p id=\"caption-attachment-608\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Fun Foam; available at Michael&#39;s Art Supply and some Wal Marts<\/p><\/div>\n<p>Fun Foam is flexible, takes glue,\u00a0paints well and is easy to cut and shape.<\/p>\n<p>Fun Foam has been around for some time but relegated to the \u201ckiddie kraft\u201d market. It has seen a resurgence in Sci Fi fan costuming and prop building.\u00a0A local Phoenix costumer used it to make the body armor for his Batman costume.\u00a0Since it is flexible and comes in a thicker size, he could use it to safely recreate the \u201cspikes\u201d along the outer edge of the Batman gloves.<\/p>\n<p>In the Death Ray prop for the\u00a0SciFi web series, \u201cNormally This Weird,\u201d\u00a0\u00a0Fun Foam was originally purchased as a spacer between tubing on the prop base. Time Machine.&#8217;\u00a0We could do no painting or modifying to\u00a0the actual surfaces.\u00a0We found that the Fun Foam could be used to create or apply a non-permanent and non-damaging surface that could be painted or\u00a0receive additional props or details.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\">\n<div id=\"attachment_612\" style=\"width: 580px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><a href=\"https:\/\/davidstipes.net\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/03\/1342-cropped.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-612\" class=\"size-full wp-image-612\" title=\"1342-cropped\" src=\"https:\/\/davidstipes.net\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/03\/1342-cropped.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"570\" height=\"385\" srcset=\"https:\/\/davidstipes.net\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/03\/1342-cropped.jpg 570w, https:\/\/davidstipes.net\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/03\/1342-cropped-300x202.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 570px) 100vw, 570px\" \/><\/a><p id=\"caption-attachment-612\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Fun Foam resurfacing the center console of vintage car.<\/p><\/div>\n<p>Diane used the Fun Foam to solve a size \/ compatibility issue with the firing controls.\u00a0We had items that would function as the handles but we also wanted hoses to attach to them.\u00a0Because Fun Foam is so flexible, almost moldable, Diane was able to manufacture rubber &#8216;boots&#8217;
